Essaouira: Shared responsibility and a common commitment for a world heritage

The participants in an interactive meeting, organized on Tuesday, December 21 in the Cité des Alizés, were unanimous in stressing that the preservation of Essaouira as a world heritage is a “shared responsibility” and a “common commitment”.

Initiated as part of a three-day workshop, organized jointly by the UNESCO Office for the Maghreb and the Essaouira-Mogador Association, this meeting, marked by the presence of André Azoulay, Advisor to HM the King and President -founder of the Essaouira-Mogador Association, was an opportunity for the various actors and stakeholders concerned by the cultural thing, to focus on the main challenges of the preservation of Essaouira as a property inscribed on the world heritage list.

During this debate, the participants underlined the need to reconcile the constraints of development and the imperative of preserving this universal heritage. They also explained that the main challenge remains to ensure that the Souiris become part of this process of safeguarding and rehabilitating the rich and diversified heritage that abounds in the medina, insisting on the importance of the role of education and of raising awareness among rising generations.
