In an internal letter to Vogue employees, Anna Wintour (editor-in-chief and artistic director of Vogue US and director of Vogue content internationally) apologized for the difficulties encountered by racialized people within the magazine as well as for the lack of diversity, People reported.
“I want to say plainly that I know Vogue has not found enough ways to elevate and give space to Black editors, writers, photographers, designers, and other creators,” the editor-in-chief wrote in an internal email to Vogue staff, “We have made mistakes too, publishing images or stories that have been hurtful or intolerant. I take full responsibility for those mistakes.”
This week the new #VogueChallenge appeared on the TikTok social network before abounding on Twitter and Instagram: It defends diversity and representation of minorities by highlighting beauty purely and simply, regardless of what fashion dictates and of the skin color. Hundreds of thousands of young people thus took part in the challenge by posing and editing a photo stamped with ‘Vogue’ as if they appeared on the cover of Vogue magazine. The result is great and above all, it signals the desire of everyone to make things happen at this level!
