I just don’t even know where to begin with this one. I’m literally speechless. The energy in this room was like none other. Walking for @fendi @silviaventurinifendi and being the first hijab wearing woman to do so is just so incredibly unbelievable in itself but the fact that I walked in @karllagerfeld last collection with Fendi is…. words could never describe how I felt being so fortunate enough to walk in Karl’s last creations alongside such strong and incredible women. The fact that so many people including those who’ve never met Karl like me were so touched and inspired by him tells you how much of an icon he is. You will be missed by many, Rest easy 🖤
Ugbad Abdi is the revelation of the year in the world of fashion. Indeed, just in the matter of a few weeks, the Somali-born model was able to walk in the latest Karl Lagerfeld’s show for Fendi in Milan alongside the Hadid sisters and made history as the first-ever hijabi model to walk for the brand.
Breathtakingly beautiful, the young woman is also a sign of real change. She is “the model who breaks the boundaries”, as Vogue US dubbed her in a feature article in February 2019 issue.
Born in Somalia during a civil war, Ugbad Abdi spent the first nine years of her life in a refugee camp in Kenya. “I never felt like I missed something,” says the young woman in the magazine. “I had friends, family, food and a roof, and I was very grateful for that”. She then moved with her family to Des Moines, in the United States, and made sure to pursue her studies. Two months after her graduation, a recruiter from the Next Models Agency spotted her.
In January, the young woman marks the spirits by walking for Valentino haute couture, alongside big figures like Alek Wek or Naomi Campbell. On Instagram, Ugbad Abdi declares never being so happy in her life. ” I’ve always dreamt of walking for Valentino and to think that it is the first-ever show I’ve walked for is so bizarre”.
