Photos: Hijab looks from Met Gala 2018

Written by FDM

The annual fundraising event Met Gala held in New York City announced a theme of « Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination ». The night saw many celebrities embracing the latter with numerous headpieces, including the ‘Hijab’.

Looks comprising headpieces, veils, and religious dresses took over the red carpet. Among them were many that looked like Hijabs (veils) sported by a number of celebrities. Indeed, veiling of the head by women was practiced in a variety of Christian traditions until the end of the 20th century, contrary to popular belief.

Today, the same veil is worn by Muslim women as a symbol of modesty and privacy and is called the ‘Hijab’, the basis of many debates and hate towards muslims.

Reactions to the looks were various as usual. Some hailed the Celebrities’ choice to incorporate these traditions into their outfits while others noted the double standard in society regarding hair covering.

Either way, none of it takes away from the beauty of these outfits. And some might end up inspiring new trends. See for yourself!
