Zineb El Briouil, 18, is the only female jockey in Morocco to have won twelve national events. A rare achievement in a discipline dominated by men. Out of the 277 jockeys of Morocco, there are only three that are women, one of whom even went to France to train. On May 7, she competed for an international prize in Marrakech against women jockeys from all over the world.
The young woman has horse racing in her blood. She grew up in a family passionate about horse racing since her father was her trainer for years. At 9, she practiced Jumping before studying for three years at the National Horse Institute of Dar el Salam in Rabat,
« When I ask other riders why they don’t want to become a jockey, they say it’s hard. Plus, we only see boys on the racetracks so the girls think that they can’t do it, » she told AFP.
While her father said: » Girls are practicing other equestrian sports, such as Jumping or tbourida. But the racehorse is very difficult, he can hit and bite. That’s why coaches do not want to take the risk. I’m taking it because she is my daughter and I know she can do it. »
For him, « We now need more efforts at the national level, there are eight races a week in Morocco, let’s book one for women ! ». Because they have their place on the racecourses too.
