Staff at Hacienda Healthcare, where she was hospitalized, did not notice she was pregnant, according to a source quoted by the local CBS network. They were alerted when they “heard her moan”, according to this source.
In order to investigate into how the patient got pregnant, police asked all the institution’s staff
to give DNA samples and carry out checks on other patients, according to sources quoted by ABC15 .
The Hacienda Healthcare Center, which provides care to approximately 2,500 people a year throughout the state of Arizona, promised in a statement to cooperate with the law. “We are conducting an internal audit of our protocols to ensure that each resident is as safe and well cared for as possible,” he added.
The case is similar to the one portrayed in the movie “Hable con ella” (“Speak with her”) (2002) by Spanish director Pedro Almodovar. The movie tells the story of a woman who was raped while in a vegetative state, and ended up waking up when giving birth. The movie received an Oscar for best screenplay which was inspired by a news story in Romania.
