US’ first female muslim judge found dead in New York

In the United states, Sheila Abdus-Salaam the first Muslim woman to serve as a  judge has been found dead in New York’s Hudson river.

Abdus-Salam was 65 years-old. She was reported as missing earlier in the day. When her fully clothed body was spotted floating off Harlem about 1.45pm local time, police finally identified her as the missing judge, media outlets reported on Wednesday.

According to the Post, sources indicated « no obvious signs of trauma or injuries indicating criminality or foul play, and that her death appeared to be a suicide. »  However, only autopsy is to determine the cause of her death.

Abdus-Salaam, a native of Washington, became the first African American woman appointed to the court of appeals, the state supreme court of New York, in 2013.
