Written by FDM

59 countries, including Morocco, will participate with 160 films at the 40th edition of the Cairo International Film Festival, scheduled from November 20 till 29.

Moroccan feature films “Al Jahiliya” by Hicham Lasri and “Laaziza” by Mohcine Basri are shortlisted, along with six other productions, as part of the competition “Horizons of New Arab Cinema”, according to the committee organizing the festival.

“Al Jahiliya” by Hicham Lasri

“Al Jahiliya” tells the animated story of six characters in a frame marked by social tragedies. Unlike Hicham Lasri’s previous films, which were generally surrealistic, “Jahiliya”, as described by the director, is a plural voice fusing three or four events that have no temporal link in common. The main roles of the film are played by Aziz Hettab, Nisrine Radi, Mustafa Houari and Zoubida Akif.

“Laaziza” by Mohcine Basri

“Laaziza” tells the story of a 7 months pregnant woman whose husband left her. When the by reaches school age, the father goes out of his way to get his son back. The film stars Rachid El Ouali, Omar Lotfy, Sonia Oukacha, Zakaria Atifi and Fatima Azzahra Benasser.

This year’s edition will pay tribute to Egyptian actors Hassan Hosni and Fatine Hamama, British director Ralph Fiennes and Egyptian composer Hicham Nazih.
