Written by FDM

Tunisian blogger and activist, Lina Ben Mhenni, was buried on Tuesday, January 28th, after battling a long illness. Unlike the traditional burial ceremony, the late Lina’s coffin was carried out by women, as opposed to men. A very symbolic gesture for the activist who courageously fought for the rights of women in her country.

Hundreds of Tunisians followed the funeral of activist and blogger Lina Ben Mhenni on Tuesday, January 28th, following her death after a battle against the disease.

Women who carried her coffin on the shoulders leaving the family home started ululating and singing the national anthem. A first in the country because traditionally women are known to abstain from attending funerals.

The funeral prayer was performed in the cemetery of Djellaz prior to the burial in the Martyrs’ square.

Civil society figures, young people of her generation and a bunch of anonymous people took part in this national funeral, which took place in an atmosphere of emotion and meditation.
