Saudi Arabia gives women the right to a copy of their marriage contract

The Saudi Arabia’s Justice ministry announced that brides are allowed to have a copy of their marriage contracts for the first time. A privilege that was only exclusive to men.

The move is to “ensure her awareness of her rights and the terms of the contact,” AFP news agency reported on Tuesday. The justice ministry announced the order in a statement published by the Saudi state news agency SPA.

The decision aims to “protect the rights of the woman and facilitate procedures for her”. It also said the decision took into consideration that a woman would need a copy of her marriage contract in case of a dispute with her husband and in court.
