French-Moroccan actor Said Taghmaoui joined the prestigious “Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences”, known as Academy of Oscars, a Hollywood institution that selects the films and actors named in the competition.

The actor of the iconic film “The Hate” is the third Moroccan to join the esteemed organization after Nabil Ayouch and Khadija Alami. The Hollywood-based actor thus positions himself a little higher in the American showbiz. He took to his Instagram “Stories” to share the big news:

This year, the institution is playing the diversity card as a reaction to the many criticisms about the representation of minorities, who flooded social networks with the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite.

Among the new artists, 38% are people of color, reports AFP, including actress and comedian Mindy Kaling, the youngest Quvenzhané Wallis (14), actor Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”, “Black Panther “), musicians Nitin Sawhney, Kendrick Lamar or Carlinhos Brown. Hence, artists of diverse ethnicities represent 16% of the total of the members against 8% in 2015, according to the same source.

Women, significantly fewer in number than men, also increased in number, rising to 31% against 25% three years ago. Among them this year, the Tunisian producer Dora Bouchoucha , the Lebanese Nadine Labaki and the French actresses Léa Seydoux, Sofia Boutella and Emmanuelle Seigner.
