Quality of Living City Ranking: Rabat Tops Rio de Janeiro and Istanbul (Mercer)

The world’s largest human resources consulting firm, Mercer, has just released its 2019 global city ranking of quality of living. Rabat and Casablanca ranked higher than Rio de Janeiro and Istanbul. Globally, Vienna tops the ranking.

In its 2019 report, Mercer Consulting ranks 231 cities worldwide. Rabat and Casablanca hold the same positions as they occupied in the 2018 report. They are respectively 117th and 124th. The two cities still have the merit of topping cities like Rio de Janeiro(118) , Sao Paulo (119, Brazil) and Istanbul (130, Turkey).

According to the study, Vienna (Austria) tops the ranking for the 10th year running, closely followed by Zurich (2, Switzerland). In joint third place are Auckland (New Zealand), Munich( Germany) and Vancouver (Canada). New York is 44th and Los Angeles is in 66th position. Paris is 39th.

As for countries from the MENA Region, the British firm has ranked Tunis 114th, Cairo 177th, and Algiers 185th.

To conduct this study, Mercer takes into account 39 criteria, including Natural environment, political, social, economic and security factors. The study is aimed at businesses and governments that employ expatriate staff.
