“Les pionnières”, photo exhibition highlights women pioneers in sports

Written by FDM

In Morocco, an array of women has managed to win in a rather masculine environment. Sportswomen are at the heart of the exhibition “Les Pionnières” by photographer François Beaurain and to discover from July 3 at the French Institute of Rabat.

We do not know their faces, yet they are pioneers in the sports and artistic world in Morocco. To make up for this, photographer François Beaurain went to meet 13 women who were the first to practice an activity in their field.

“Les pionnières” presents a “series of portraits of Moroccan women, among the first to practice a sports or artistic activity in their field. From varied social backgrounds, champions or passionate, each of them had to face various difficulties. But whatever the obstacles, all are proud of their journey and success today.” Reads a statement of the photographer and plastic artist, based between Paris and Rabat, who started his artistic career a few years ago after a expatriation in Liberia.

We’ll discover the course of Hasna, vice-world champion of Capoeira, Hind, world champion in car racing (2016 and 2017), Meriem, Thai boxing world champion in 2016, Ibtissama, champion and first surf instructor in Morocco, or Maryam, international player and captain of the 7 rugby team of Témara. This exhibition thus aims to highlight their fight and pay tribute to them.
