Najat M’jid appointed UN Deputy Secretary-General on Violence against Children

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced on Thursday the appointment of Moroccan Najat Maalla M’jid as Special Representative on Violence against Children, with the rank of Deputy Secretary General.

Founder of the Bayti association and pediatrician, Maalla M’jid has “devoted her life over the past three decades to the promotion and protection of children’s rights,” Guterres’ spokesman said in a statement. She was head of the department of pediatrics and director of the hospital Hay Hassani mother and child of Casablanca, and is a member of the National Council of Human Rights (CNDH) and founder of the association Bayti.

From 2008 to 2014, Najat M’jid served as United Nations Special Rapporteur on children trafficking, child prostitution and child pornography. She is also a consultant for national and international projects, strategies and policies related to the promotion and protection of the child’s rights.

Last February, she was appointed to the United Nations by seven experts on the Advisory Committee of the Civil Society on the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse.
