After 11 days of competition, Morocco ranked 4th out of 53 at the African Youth Games (JAJ-2018) held from July 18 to 28 in Algiers. The country has collected 106 medals in an array of disciplines, including boxing.
Morocco’s Hind Moustakim won the gold medal by beating Botswana’s Letloa Oteng in the 57kg category, while Khaoula Bassim (60kg) got the silver after being beaten in the final by Tunisia’s Mawada Taghouti despite a brilliant race.
Moroccan women also shone in other combat sports. Golden medals were won by Salma Ouhammad (Kumite girls – 48 kg), Sara Slassi (Kumité girls – 53 kg), and Zahra Chajai-Fatima (Kumité girls – 59 kg) in karate, and by Mouassilet Kaoutar (-44 kg) ), Safia Salih (-55 kg) and Fatima Zahra Abu Fares (+67 kg) in taekwondo. Morocco has ranked first overall in this discipline!
As for Karima Kanoun, she went home with a bronze medal in the triathlon. The young triathlete who is only 15 years old, completed the 750 m of swimming, 20 km of cycling and 5 Km of running in 01 H 14 min and 07 sec, beating the Egyptian Maram Chafai (4th place) in the sprint (2 sec difference).
