Shocking revelations and a first arrest. A man suspected of sexual abuse of seasonal workers including Moroccan women was arrested in Spain before being released on bail, according to the investigation of Buzzfeed News and the German site Correctiv, published in early May, which denounced this scandalous case in the region of Huelva.
A hundred women who pick strawberries said they were harassed, insulted and physically assaulted or even raped by their superiors. According to information relayed by the newspaper El Pais, this arrested man, 47, supervised these women during the day. And, as reported by the Spanish agency Efe who contacted sources close to the case, the police and the labor inspectorate are investigating “in depth” on this case and “zero tolerance” will be appropriate in case of sexual abuse “No matter who the victim is and whatever the situation”.
These women working in the strawberry fields are chosen for their precariousness in their country of origin, as CNRS researcher Chadia Arab explained, who devoted her latest book “Ladies of strawberries, fairy fingers” to the Moroccan seasonal migration in Spain.
