In light of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace on April 6th, the most successful footballer in the world, Marta Vieira da Silva, explains in a short video how sport plays a role in the empowerment of women and girls.

The famous footballer Marta Vieira da Silva is convinced that sport is a form of women and girls empowerment. The Brazilian striker has been nominated (last summer) as UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador for Women and Girls in Sport and explains in a video the 5 ways in which sport empowers women and girls. A campaign broadcasted on social networks on the occasion of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace this April 6th.

Among the 5 benefits stated by the best female football player of all time, sports can change attitudes, challenge stereotypes, gain visibility, and boost self-confidence to achieve goals and dreams.

About appointing Marta Vieira da Silva as a goodwill ambassador, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, UN Women Executive Director, said, ” She is a great example for women and girls around the world. Her own experience is a testament to what is possible in life through talent, determination, and courage. Sport is a universal language: it inspires us and unites us while forcing us to go beyond our limits.”
