Harvey Weinstein found guilty of sexual assault and rape, first #MeToo milestone

Written by FDM

The jury found Harvey Weinstein guilty of two felony sex crimes but didn’t go so far as to declare him a sexual predator, but it was a historic verdict, nonetheless.

On Monday, Hollywood’s most influential producers, Harvey Weinstein, 67, was found guilty of rape and sexual assault but acquitted of the most serious charge, predatory behavior ( punishable by life imprisonment).

After 5 days of deliberations, the jury found him guilty only of two least serious counts, the sexual assault of former production assistant Mimi Haleyi, in 2006, and the rape of aspiring actress Jessica Mann, in 2013.

While he faces up a possible sentence of 25 years in prison, his famous accusers, who popularized the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements, hailed a decision marking “the beginning of justice” for “survivors of sexual assault”.

His sentence will be later determined by Judge James Burke, who presided over the trials. This is the first conviction in a post #MeToo case.
