Written by FDM

Morocco will celebrate on, Saturday, May 18, the International Museum Day. On this occasion, all the national museums will be accessible for free, and a special opening will take place from 21h to midnight.

According to the president of the National Museum Foundation (FNM), Mehdi Qotbi, the aim of this decision is “to encourage Moroccans to visit museums, especially after the ftour,” he said.

The International Museum Day is organized every year around the world by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), it aims to raise awareness among civil society that “museums [are] an important means of cultural exchange, cultural enrichment, the development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace between peoples”, as the ICOM website reads.

This year’s International Museum Day will focus on the museums’ new role as active players in their communities, says ICOM. Last year, more than 37,000 museums in nearly 156 countries participated in the event.
