The American Merriam-Webster dictionary has just declared « feminism » as the most widely lookup throughout the year of 2017. A word used many times by Donald Trump during verbal attacks on women, but also in light of multiple assault accusations that have taken over Hollywood.
In fact, the situation of women has been one of the main topics of discussion this year not only in the US, but all over the world. In the last weeks of January, thousands of women took part in the Women’s March in Washington DC and around the world after the inauguration of Donald Trump.
« Feminism » continued to pop in the news with the revelations about the famous producer Harvey Weinstein, accused of sexual assault, but also with the many other allegations that followed in the world of entertainment, politics and the media.
The word « feminism » which entered the English dictionary in 1841, by Noah Webster, when it was defined simply as “the qualities of females” now means “the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes” and “organised activity on behalf of women’s rights and interests.” according to Merriam-Webster.
