Fatima-Zahra Abu Fares voted best sportswoman of the year in Morocco

Taekwondo champion Fatima-Zahra Abu Fares was voted the best sportswoman of the year in Morocco, according to a survey conducted by the national radio sports service in 40 national media outlets and made public on 30 December.

The best sportswoman in Morocco for the year 2018 is Taekwondo champion Fatima-Zahra Abu Fares , gold medalist at the last Youth Olympic Games held in Buenos Aires. An honorary title which was awarded to her after a poll conducted by the sports service of the National Radio in 40 national media. The native of Fkih Bensaleh broke away in the lead by scoring 103 points, far ahead of the athlete Rabab Arrafi (30 pts), third in 1,500m at the third Intercontinental Cup held in Ostrava, Czech Republic, the third best performance in the history of Moroccan women’s participation in this event (former World Cup) since 1979 in Montreal. Third place went to another taekwondo player, namely Safia Salih, with 20 points, who also won a silver medal at the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina.

On the men’s side, Atlas Lions striker Hakim Ziyech was voted best athlete of the year in Morocco. The leader of Ajax Amsterdam was voted in the lead with a total of 88 points, in consecration of a good season with the Moroccan selection as well as within his Dutch club. His team mate, defender Achraf Hakimi, a member of the German club Borussia Dortmund, was elected second with 31 points, followed by athlete Soufiane El Bakkali, vice-world champion and winner of the 3,000m steeples at Monaco meeting (Dimaond League), where he achieved the best world performance of the year with a score of  7min 58:15.
