The actor, known for his role in “Hairspray Live” (2016), was selected to play in the musical comedy dedicated to the king of pop.

Ephraim Sykes is one of the nominees for the Grammy Awards 2020, in the category “Best Music Album in Theater” in the musical “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations”.

He has also played in different American TV shows. The young will be entrusted to play the role of Michael Jackson, who died ten years ago at the age of 50.

The musical “MJ The Musical” is expected to release starting July 6, 2020, on Broadway. It will be directed by Lynn Nottage, renowned American playwright, accompanied by choreographer Christopher Wheeldon.

Lynn Nottage, who also won the Pultizer Prize twice, says the musical will focus on a particular period in Michael Jackson’s life. ” We chose the early ’90s, specifically the Dangerous tour, which was the apotheosis of his artistic career,” she told the New York Times.

Controversy

Just months after the “Leaving Neverland” documentary was released, this musical project is facing criticism regarding the pedophilia scandals that were linked to the artist before and after his death.

“We are really trying to find a way to tell this story while showing respect. To everyone. To all who are involved in this collaboration. Respectful of the music that was made. We are diligent in thinking about the best way to tell the musical legacy of someone who was a genius but who also has a lot of baggage,” said Nottage.
