“Rajaa Al Jeddaoui died this morning from Covid-19. Because of the health protocol, we have not planned a public funeral,” said Ashraf Zaki, the union Egyptian president.
Tested positive on May 24, Rajaa had been treated in isolation in a hospital in Ismailia, 130 km east of Cairo, for more than forty days, according to local press.
The actress, whose career began in modeling, has played since her first film “Ghariba” (The stranger) in 1958 in more than 380 films, plays and television series alongside notably the biggest names in Egyptian cinema. She enjoyed great renown throughout the Arab world.
For more than twenty years, she has conquered the small screen where she mainly embodied the roles of matriarchs and rich people. She was also the niece of the legendary actress and dancer of the early 20th century, Tahiya Carioca.
Her only daughter, Amira Mokhtar, announced her death on her Facebook page.
