On October 31, the Café Politis was held in La Sqala, to discuss the ongoing topic of harassment under the theme “Harassment, a law indeed! But what are the reality (s) on the ground? “.
Indeed, on September 12, the law n°103-13 that will now combat violence against women came into force. And while “it does not give complete satisfaction to associations and feminist activists, it has the merit to exist”, as Ahmed Ghayet sustains, in his column published in Aujourd’hui le Maroc. He is the founder of Marocains Pluriels association in charge of Café Politis along with the association Sqala.
He went on to remind the daily life of a woman in Morocco: it is “difficult (…) to evolve towards the respect, the confidence and the dignity to which she is entitled in our public space: catcalling, sexist remarks, vexations, inappropriate gestures and remarks are sadly prevailing in our social daily life”.
To debate this topic, Sanaa El Aji, editorial director of Marayana.com, sociologist and author of “Sexualité et célibat au Maroc,” Khadija Boujanoui, Chair of 2M’s Parity and Diversity Committee and Mr Youssef Chehbi, lawyer, tackled the topic with liberation. The session was followed by addressing questions and especially fears of audience members.
The Café Politis is, as described by Ahmed Ghayet a school, a place to ” meet the desire of new generations to understand and debate, as well as adults’ to face to the needs arising from the changes in our society, “he explains.
