Military service will be compulsory for women as well. The Chamber of Deputies passed last night by almost absolute majority the draft of the law on compulsory military service for young people aged 19 to 24 years.
Only two members of the Federation of the Democratic Left (FGD – opposition) voted against this text to be submitted from next week to the House of Councilors for a final vote in January.
Abdellatif Loudiyi, Minister Delegate for National Defense, said that military centers reserved for women will be separate from those of men. Women may, however, benefit from a temporary or permanent exemption in the event of marriage or for those with dependent children. The minister stresses that the obligation of military service for girls falls within the framework of gender equality, as provided by the constitution. The law will be submitted next week to the House of Councilors for a quick vote.
The restoration of military service, it should be remembered, comes under the royal instructions and in harmony with the provisions of Article 38 of the Constitution, which stipulates that all citizens contribute to the defense of the homeland and its integrity against any aggression or threat.
