Barbie pays tribute to 17 inspiring women to mark International Women’s Day

Written by FDM

Long gone are the days where Barbie was blonde, slim and blue-eyed by definition. As the Mattel group has been trying to break its stereotypical image of beauty, Barbie is releasing an entire collection of dolls inspired by real-life role models just in time for International Women’s Day.

“Barbie Inspiring Women” collection pays tribute to 17 boundary-breaking women from diverse backgrounds and fields. Modern role models include gold-winning Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim, “Wonder Woman” filmmaker Patty Jenkins and boxing champion Nicola Adams. Historical Barbies are modeled after artist Frida Kahlo, NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson and famed pilot Amelia Earhart.

Many of these women shared their satisfaction at having a Barbie in their effigy and hope to be an example and encourage little girls to follow their dreams.

Launched almost 60 years ago, the Barbie doll has become a true icon. Today, the brand is aware aware of this fact and wants to give a new dimension, less superficial, to this doll that inspires many little girls around the world.
