Previously scheduled from April 3 to 13 and then from September 18 to 28 in the Moroccan desert, the 35th edition of the Marathon des Sables has been postponed again… in 2021.
“As a result of the deterioration of the international situation that once appeared stable a few weeks back, we take the momentous decision to postpone the 35th Marathon des Sables until April 2 to 12 2021,” thus announced the organizers in a statement published on the official website of the race.
Each year, this Ultra trail attracts thousands of runners from all over the world. The goal is to walk nearly 220 km on six stages in the heart of the breathtaking landscape of the Moroccan desert.
But “in this context of general uncertainty, we are facing too many unknowns to calmly organize our great MDS adventure, insisted Patrick Bauer, race director. We were ready to respond to all the sanitary measures that should have been put in place. For us, it is important to maintain the spirit and the values that make the DNA of the Marathon des Sables, namely solidarity, human relations, sharing, benevolence is the fundamentals of our event, and could not be preserved in view of the current conditions and projected in two months,” he explained, stressing that, it is our responsibility to guarantee the health of everyone.“
He concluded: “We are aware that this postponement will have consequences for all of us. But we insist on offering a 35th anniversary up to everyone’s expectations. We look forward to seeing you all next April on the start line and reuniting the great family of the Marathon des sables.“
