Candidates who dream of the beautiful crown, will have much less to worry about regarding their appearance. It may seem trivial, but it is rather revolutionary in the world of beauty pageant. Miss America will no longer judge on criteria related to physical appearance and will cut the swimsuit competition from its televised broadcast, as announced on June 5 by its president.
“We are no longer a pageant. We are a competition. We will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance,” stated Gretchen Carlson, Chairwoman of the Miss America Board of Directors.
The swimsuit contest, which accounted for 10% of the final score, will be replaced by an exchange with the jury, while the evening dress showcase, which contributed to 15% of the score, will allow the candidates the freedom of choice in terms of what to wear. And during this presentation, each participant will discuss the social projects in which they would like to launch once elected, reads in a statement issued by Miss America Organization, the initiator of the event.
Next competition: September 9, 2019. Broadcast by ABC.
