At a time when beauty standards are revisited, the Barbie doll manufacturer Mattel presented on Monday, November 13, their next doll. Created to honor the American fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, the doll is wearing a hijab.
In 2016, Muhammad became the first American to compete in the games while wearing a hijab. “I’m proud to know that little girls everywhere can now play with a Barbie who chooses to wear hijab! This is a childhood dream come true,” Muhammad said in a tweet.
The band Mattel wanted to pay tribute to this great sportswoman by selling a doll dressed as a fencer with a veil over the head, becoming the first veiled Barbie ever made by the group. The news was announced at Glamour’s Women of the Year summit. The doll will go on sale in 2018.
